At the website <http://www.paliativo.org.br/> strikes me a banner with the origin of the word palliative, define as “Protection”. That is the meaning of the palliate, derived from the Latin pallium, the word to name the coat used by knights to protect themselves from storms.
Protecting a person is a way of taking care, with the aim of reducing pain and suffering, coming from a physical, mental, social or spiritual origin. So if you’re saying somebody needs palliative care, don’t be scared.
Pay attention that every time I talk about palliative care, people get suspicious and feel pity. Palliative care has a connection to the dying days of life. pass away being well cared for is a blessing; but palliative care is more comprehensive, it is about preserving the dignity of life in moments of pain and suffering. In 2002 the OMS defined that palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual.
Clinical aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to relieve, heal and remove specific clinical symptoms, such as nausea. It is used for palliative care, especially because of the reduced side effects and low toxicity. In the past, aromatherapy was used only for the holistic care of the person intended to relax and deal with illness situations. Holistic care is invaluable because of the influence of the well-being of the person in their healing process. But there was not enough research and interest on the part of the scientific academy to find the use of essential oils to cure specific clinical issues. In fact, this has changed, over the past 20 years, interest in the properties of essential oils has been revealed by hundreds of scientific studies. Now, through the hands of health professionals, essential oils have been introduced in hospitals and clinics.
In some countries, aromatherapy has been used for palliative care in a formal and systemic manner, such as Italy, Germany, the UK, the USA, Australia, Japan and Korea.
